Protection Orders
Protection Orders are a key part of the fisheries legislation in
Scotland under the Freshwater and Salmon Fisheries (Scotland) Act
1976. The
principle is that increased 'protection' under the law can be granted to fishery proprietors and land owners in a river catchment area, in return for
increased access and availability of freshwater fishing.
Though the legislation was aimed primarily at brown trout, all freshwater
fish are covered including coarse fish. The S.F.C.A. become involved in
the subject in 1997. Ralston McPherson is a member of the Consultative
Committee that reviews new
P.O. applications and George Glen served on Lord Sewel's 'Task Force' that reviewed the
system in 1998.
Existing P.O.s are not perceived by all to act in the interest of the
angler so this is a contentious subject recently re-examined by the Angling for
Change group.
