The aim of entering the European Championships in 1999 was to increase
experience at the highest level and for a wider range of our anglers to learn a
lot. Well next to nothing was learned in this dreadful match when so few fish
were caught in practice and in competition. With hindsight we would never have
participated in what always promised to be a bad match on the wrong venue at the
wrong time of year – the event fulfilled that promise.
In many ways 6 days of practice was too much and counted against the team
rather than helping. The practice sessions were so bad that, like many other
teams, the anglers did not enjoy the fishing and were not looking forward to the
match knowing what to expect. To catch 1 small perch was the basic objective for
all of the competitors.
In the match there were 84 blanks between 105 anglers over 2 days. Nearly as
many blanked as caught. There was no secret method, our approach was not wrong,
we simply had no confidence, some bad draws did not help our cause and we got no
luck. Our result could easily have been a lot better with a couple of extra fish
(3 blanks on both days) but it could just as easily have been worse.
Jimmy Fullerton did relatively well in practice and came through the match
well with an 8th and a 9th in section for 27th
Individual place.
