New Format for Ladies National Championships

Over the past 12 months the SFCA has been conducting some informal research into why more female pleasure anglers are not taking the opportunity to enter competitions, and particularly the Ladies National Championships.

The results of the survey have revealed that more women and girls would enter but for the fact that they normally fish with a friend or partner, and the thought of fishing a full 5 hour match without the back up of some form of assistance is very daunting.

The SFCA always aims to be a totally inclusive and supportive organisation and has for a long time been trying to address the gender imbalance within the sport. Therefore, in order to try to encourage more individuals to enter, it has been decided to have two separate categories within this years’ Ladies National Championships. ‘Unassisted and Assisted’.

The ‘Unassisted’ anglers will fish as usual for the title of Scottish Ladies National Champion. This category will be open to those individuals who can fish totally unassisted from setting up until the final weigh-in. They may however get assistance with transporting their tackle down to their peg.

The second, ‘Assisted’ Category will be open to anyone. These individuals may receive assistance during the competition. This assistance can include helping to set up, landing and unhooking of fish as well as some coaching during the match. The SFCA will have coaches on site to assist. This Category will be designed to provide a supported learning environment and and opportunity for female anglers to try Match fishing or improve their knowledge and skills. The SFCA will provide a new trophy for this category which will be called the Scottish Ladies Novice Championships.

The aim of this change is to provide an opportunity for more women and girls to try Match fishing and to gain the confidence to be able to enter competitions in the future. If you would like to know more about the event please contact us at
